How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

If you want a long-lasting, comfortable, permanent tooth replacement option, there’s no better choice than dental implants. Because dental implants get rooted into your jawbone via a metal post, they look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. They also last longer than other replacement options.

How long, exactly? To a large extent, that depends on how you care for your implant. That’s why Dr. Scott Evans doesn’t just offer dental implants. He also offers ongoing care for them right here at our office in the University Park area of Dallas, Texas.

A lifelong solution

Here’s the great news about dental implants: They’re designed to last your lifetime. Once your jawbone has integrated the metal post that serves as the root for the implant, you get a firm foundation that shouldn’t budge.

You may, however, need to have the crown attached to that post replaced if it gets cracked or chipped. Don’t worry. Crown replacement is an easy, surgery-free process. Dr. Evans still uses the same post. He only replaces the top portion — the prosthetic tooth.

With regular visits to our office — the twice-yearly tooth cleaning and checkup you should be getting anyway — Dr. Evans can monitor your implant and help keep the crown on it functioning as long as possible.

Protecting your implants

A dental implant is a lot like a normal tooth. It should last your lifetime. But if it isn’t getting the oral care it needs, you can run into problems.

That means your at-home oral hygiene routine — brushing and flossing daily — makes a big difference. Dr. Evans might also recommend that you use a specially designed brush to clean around your crown.

To protect your crown, avoid chewing on hard things like ice. While the crown resists staining, you can also help keep it and your other teeth bright by steering clear of staining substances like tobacco, coffee, and tea. If you do opt for a hot drink in the morning, add a splash of milk to help minimize staining.

With an implant, your biannual visits to our office become extra important. At these regular appointments, Dr. Evans can check your implant and our team can clean away any potentially compromising material like plaque and tartar.
