Porcelain Onlays in Dallas, TX

Dr. Evans uses porcelain onlays to restore teeth for patients in the Dallas, Texas area. No one will ever know you had any dental work done!

What are Porcelain Onlays?

Porcelain onlays are fittings that extend over the top of the teeth, and may cover the outside surface of them. Like porcelain inlays, they are used to fill in damage and make a tooth look as natural as possible, yet cover more surface area than inlays do. While inlays are used inside the tooth’s surface, onlays are placed outside or over the top of the tooth.

Benefits of Porcelain Onlays

  • Can cover an extensive damaged area
  • Virtually indistinguishable from other areas of the tooth
  • Durable and long lasting
  • Easy to care for and keep clean

Porcelain Onlays Before & After

As you can see, porcelain onlays can make a remarkable difference when it comes to restoring damaged teeth to their former condition. Not all patients will achieve the same results, so yours may vary.

How are Porcelain Onlays Performed?

Porcelain onlays require two separate visits to Straight Teeth Orthodontics. During your first visit, Dr. Evans will:

  • Administer a local anesthetic
  • Remove damaged matter from your teeth using dental instruments
  • Make an impression of the remaining tooth, which will be sent to a dental laboratory in order to create your onlay
  • Attach a temporary onlay using porcelain or dental resin and a special curing light

During your second visit:

  • Local anesthesia is administered
  • The temporary onlay is removed
  • Your permanent onlay is placed into position using bonding cement
  • A special curing light is used to harden the bonding material and secure the onlay
  • Your onlay is shaped and polished

Preparing for Porcelain Onlays

No special preparations are needed before receiving porcelain onlays. The exception would be if your gums are infected, in which case a round of antibiotics could be needed prior to scheduling treatment.

Porcelain Onlays Recovery

After either visit, your mouth may be somewhat tender or sore. Over-the-counter medication is usually effective at eliminating discomfort. You may need to refrain from eating crunchy or chewy foods while your temporary onlay is in place to avoid dislodging it.
