Composite Fillings in Dallas, TX

Dr. Evans performs composite fillings for patients in the Dallas, Texas area who prefer fillings with a natural appearance.

What are Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings are dental fillings made from a composite resin material. Dental resin is a durable and natural looking material that matches the feel, texture and color of your natural teeth. They are performed on an outpatient basis safely under local anesthesia.

Benefits of Composite Fillings

  • Virtually unnoticeable
  • Does not cause allergies as is often the case with amalgam or metal fillings
  • Easy to keep clean
  • Durable and lightweight

These before and after photographs will give you an idea of the natural-looking appearance composite fillings offer over metal fillings. Individual results may vary.

How are Composite Fillings Performed?

You may require more than one visit before being fitted with composite fillings. During the first visit, an x-ray and complete dental examination will be given to determine the extent of damage. The day composite fillings are placed expect the following:

  • Numb your gums with a topical anesthetic
  • Administer local anesthesia to numb the area being worked on
  • Remove decay from the surface of your tooth
  • Dry the area with cotton, and then place gauze around the surrounding teeth to keep them dry

Once this is accomplished, thin layers of resin will be added to your tooth until the desired amount is in place. A special light is used to harden or “cure” the resin and help it adhere better. After curing takes place, Dr. Evans will then shape the hardened resin so that it is virtually unnoticeable.

It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than it does for a metal filling. That is because composite fillings require the tooth be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled.

Preparing for Composite Fillings

To prepare for this procedure, you will need to discuss your health history with Dr. Evans so he can determine the possibility of side effects.

  • You should also discuss any medications you are taking as well since some of them may interfere with anesthesia.
  • If it has been some time since your last dental cleaning, you may need to have one performed ahead of time.
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed to clear up any infection that is present.

Once the procedure is over with, your mouth, gums and tongue may feel slightly numb for an hour. During this time, you should refrain from eating, drinking or smoking. Even so, you are free to return to school or work, and may even drive yourself home from the appointment.
